Looking For Self-Esteem Therapy in Vancouver and New Westminster?
Low self-esteem rarely shows up as one big thought. It runs in the background. You second-guess yourself before you speak, brush off a compliment, or sense that everyone else was handed a manual you missed. You may already know these beliefs are unfair. Knowing that has not made them quieter.
Self-esteem therapy gives you a steady place to look at where those beliefs came from and how to loosen their grip. At Charting Pathways Counselling, registered counsellors offer self-esteem therapy in downtown Vancouver and New Westminster, and online across BC. You can begin with a free 30-minute consultation to see who feels like a good fit.
What Is Self-Esteem Therapy?
Self-esteem therapy is counselling that focuses on how you see and treat yourself. Your counsellor listens for the beliefs underneath the self-criticism, such as "I never do enough" or "I am too much". Then you examine them together, with care.
Sessions are conversations. You and your counsellor look at the patterns that keep your confidence low, such as harsh self-talk, perfectionism, and people-pleasing. Then you practise new ways of responding, both in the room and in daily life.
Depending on the counsellor, the work may draw on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which looks at how thoughts, feelings, and actions affect each other. It may also include parts work. This treats the inner critic as one voice among several and gets curious about what it is trying to protect. Either way, you set the pace.
Who Can Benefit From Self-Esteem Therapy?
People seek therapy for self-esteem at every age and stage. Some are high achievers who feel like impostors. Others are parents, students, or caregivers who have put themselves last for so long that they no longer know what they want. Many are coming out of a breakup, a job loss, or a move that shook their confidence.
Low self-esteem often travels with anxiety, perfectionism, burnout, and the after-effects of hard experiences. Our team welcomes BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ people, first responders, and anyone who has felt the need to explain themselves before therapy could begin.
If low mood has lasted for weeks, or daily tasks have become hard, check in with your doctor too. Counselling and medical care often work side by side.
Signs You May Benefit From Therapy for Self-Esteem
You may notice some of these patterns if self-esteem therapy could be a good fit:
- You replay conversations afterward, searching for what you said wrong
- You brush off your wins and remember every mistake
- You say yes first, then resent it later
- You compare yourself to the people around you and come up short
- You wait for someone else's approval before making a decision
- You have read the books and tried the affirmations, and the feeling stayed
Any one of these is common. If several sound familiar and have lasted a while, self-esteem counselling can help you understand what keeps them going.
How Self-Esteem Therapy Can Help
Many people find that self-esteem therapy turns down the volume of the inner critic once they can see it clearly. In therapy you may start to notice when the critic speaks, what it says, and whose voice it sounds like. That awareness creates a gap between the thought and your reaction, and with it more choice about what you do next.
Your counsellor can teach you specific skills for this work. CBT helps you test harsh thoughts against the evidence and build more balanced ones. Self-compassion practices give you a kinder response to your own mistakes. Parts work lets you get to know the voice that criticizes and what it fears. Mindfulness and body-based skills help you notice where shame or tension sits, so you can settle it in the moment. Boundary practice helps you say what you need without apologizing first.
Progress often starts small: speaking up in a meeting, accepting a thank-you, resting without guilt. It looks different for everyone.

Our Approach to Self-Esteem Counselling
Self-esteem therapy at Charting Pathways is warm, non-judgmental, and trauma-informed. Your counsellor will not treat you as a problem to fix. Instead, we help you build awareness of your patterns and use it to gain more choice and control over how you respond.
No two people arrive with the same story, so we draw on more than one method. Your counsellor may combine CBT, parts work, somatic practices, and self-compassion, and will adjust the mix as you tell them what is helping.
We also look at the world around you. Self-worth is shaped by family, culture, workplaces, and experiences of discrimination. We treat those as part of the picture instead of something wrong with you. Our team has particular experience supporting BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ people and first responders.
