Rochelle Kelava

Background

Prior to becoming a counsellor, I went to law school and planned to pursue a career in international human rights law. The fast-paced competitive environment initially felt like a great fit for my “type-A” personality, but by the end of my degree I was burnt-out. The pressure I put on myself to be perfect had manifested as an eating disorder, panic attacks, and disconnection from family and friends. I eventually spoke to someone about it and learned that the way I was feeling was due to a combination of my external environment and internal factors that had been developing my whole life. I’ve spent the past ten years peeling back those layers as I learn to accept myself – flaws and all.

Along the way I developed a deep curiosity about mental health as I noticed that so many others in my community were going through similar struggles. I began to work in mental health services and then eventually trained as a counsellor. There are many days when I wake up and still can’t believe this is my job, and I’m so honored that my clients trust me with their stories.

Outside of work I enjoy doing ballet, painting, and cooking from one of my many recipe books. I’m also a trained yoga teacher and find time on my mat to be a great balance to the business of life these days. I’d love to meet you and welcome you to book a free 30 minute consultation!
